7. Signage
To rationalize the official signage in and around Ross-on-Wye so that it is effective. In its current form it is confusing, misleading and full of omissions.
Comments made during the Goodrich Court and Lions Club Focus Groups "People find it hard to come into Ross due to traffic signage and the one way system," "Town not tourist friendly re: signage, parking, Sunday opening." A number of representations received from individuals and organisations. Coach drivers have complained to the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) staff about the poor signage for coaches coming to Ross. Members of ART report that customers visiting their shops complain about the signage.

Misleading and unnecessary signage was raised as an issue during the survey and by various focus groups. It is currently being addressed by a subcommittee of the Ross Town Council (RTC) and any examples where improvements could be made, or unnecessary signs removed, should be directed to the RTC.
Herefordshire County Council has recently agreed to transfer responsibility for the town’s fingerposts to Ross Town Council. |

Thin double yellow lines painted in High Street, existing ineffective no parking (urban clearway) signs in this area removed, removing nine large yellow ascetically poor signs from the town centre. |

The Ross Town Council Signage Sub-committee has been meeting regularly to address issues of signage in Ross. It comprises Cllrs Chris Bartrum, John Edwards and Caroline Utting and David Dawson (Ross Civic Society) and Carol Lowndes (Association of Ross Traders).
Working with officers from Herefordshire Council and its contractor Amey, the Group has been successful in having a number of redundant signs removed and missing ones replaced. It is currently working on adding some new street name plates where it is felt they will be useful and to assist the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty “Overlooking the Wye” project to improve signage for The John Kyrle Walk. The Group is also looking to reduce signage clutter in the town. |
