13. A Sports and Leisure Strategy for Ross
To develop an understanding of what is needed to improve the currently inadequate sport and leisure facilities in Ross-on-Wye and to ensure that the necessary funding is secured to create parity of provision with comparable communities.
The poor sports facilities in Ross are well documented.
The provision of improved sports and leisure facilities was identified as the No.1 priority for students at John Kyrle High School in the "Quick Questionnaire."
In the main questionnaire, across the age ranges, 18-23% of respondents rated the existing facilities as poor while 13-22% thought they were reasonable. Only 3-9% thought they were good.

Action |
The Ross Sports and Leisure Federation (RSLF) was formed in 2008 to co-ordinate and lobby for improvements to sports and leisure provision in Ross. It commissioned a study to be carried out on the best way to enhance facilities at the Wilton Sports Centre. Ross Town Council, in conjunction with Ross Sports and Leisure Federation should compare provision in Ross with that in other market towns in Herefordshire to ensure that parity of sporting opportunity is maintained.

Dec 2011 |
The newly-formed Ross Sports Centre partnership (RSCP) has taken over the management of the Wilton Sports grounds from Halo Leisure. The RSCP, formed by the three main users of the grounds (the Ross Cricket Club, Ross Juniors FC and Ross United football ), aims to overhaul the facilities at the Wilton grounds. In particular it will revamp the much criticised Sports Centre building, which had been allowed to degenerate into a shocking state.
Meanwhile to draw attention to Wilton as a sports centre the Ross Sports Federation is to discuss holding a Sports Festival to coincide with the Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Games torch coming to Ross. It is also going ahead with a plan to install outdoor concrete table tennis tables at Wilton and three to four other selected sites. |
