Ross on Wye Town Plan Progress Group

21. Allotments

To provide sufficient allotment space in or around Ross-on-Wye to satisfy local demand.

2% or respondents currently have an allotment and a further 8% would like one if one were available so there is a clear demand for more allotments in Ross.

Issue

To provide sufficient allotment space in or around Ross-on-Wye to satisfy local demand.

Action

A study to identify possible sites needs to be carried out and also the possibility of setting up a community garden and/or garden sharing scheme explored. 'Landshare.channel4.com' is one possible web site to look at.

Ledbury Allotment Association has recently successfully applied for funding from the Big Lottery Fund's Local Food Scheme. We need to explore the availability of public land and encourage the establishment of a Ross Allotment Society as a pressure group to develop more allotments.

Responsibility

Ross Town Council (RTC); Ross Rural Parish Council (RRPC), Tudorville Allotment Association, Transition Ross.

 Progress To Date:

Oct 2011

EnviroAbility have submitted a project proposal to the National Lottery in respect of a food project at Model Farm, Hildersley.  If successful, this may provide more land for growing local produce.

Sept 2011

The Ross Town Council Sub Committee considering this issue has approached the County Council for help in identifying additional sites for allotments.  Unfortunately, their response has been unhelpful.  Discussions are ongoing with landowners in the town about possible sites in Ross.

May 2010

RTC Sub-Committee is looking at the feasibility. Possible sites have been identified. Work is ongoing.
